An education at SUTD is about..

Interdisciplinary curriculum
You will receive an education in science, technology, arts, humanities, and social sciences, together with a firm grounding in management and entrepreneurship. This interdisciplinary curriculum provides a well-rounded education. The academic year also includes a period called Independent Activity Period (IAP) that will allow you to explore your own personal interests, and an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) that allows you to work on cutting edge research as junior colleagues in a faculty member’s research team.

The Big ‘D’
Design is all around us. At SUTD, Design as a discipline, cuts across the curriculum and provides a novel framework for the research and educational programmes. SUTD provides a holistic education that includes strong grounding in design very broadly – what we call Big-D Design – including process design, architectural design, product design, software design and systems design - design of essentially anything imaginable.

Compact education
At SUTD, you will complete a comprehensive education in only 3.5 years. Orientation will start in April , immediately followed by the start of the academic year. Students will graduate by August.

Grounded education
SUTD provides a common curriculum for all students in the freshman year and first half of the sophomore year, providing a firm foundation grounded in science, technology, and design. This exposure will provide you with a strong base for selecting and excelling in the major (pillar) of your choice for remainder of the sophomore year and junior and senior years, as well as, for future employment opportunities.

Learning Communities
The curriculum will be taught through a unique pedagogy. It starts with students organized around small group learning communities that will provide more intimate connections with faculty and one another while learning from each other. Through the learning communities, the context of design will be woven into the instruction of basic mathematics, science and social science. In short, learning in groups builds teamwork, makes learning more effective and enjoyable through frequent interactions among students, and between students and faculty.

Flexible choices
At SUTD, students do not choose their focus areas (pillars) until after undergoing a common curriculum for 1.5 years. As a result, students have the opportunity to explore various subject areas, and make more informed decisions about their focus areas. This approach provides students with a broader education that will help prepare them for flexible career options.

Hands-on Projects
Learning about a topic is exciting but so is being able to apply that knowledge and bring it to life. At SUTD, students will be engaged in project-based hands-on learning throughout the curriculum. The curriculum culminates in a capstone project that involves a large scale project through which the students apply their technology and design skills learned over the prior semesters. This ‘Art and Science of Design’ distinguishes SUTD from other universities.

Entrepreneurship: Bringing Projects to Market
The curriculum will have breadth and depth. Students will be exposed to a wide range of technically grounded fields of design, including architectural design, product design, software design and system design. Students will learn to define problems holistically and develop creative solutions from a total design perspective. They will experience the full value chain from conception through development, prototyping, manufacturing, operation and maintenance. By valuing and providing opportunities for both thinking and doing, an SUTD education will equip you to bring your innovations to the market place or assist a company to transform an idea into a commercial enterprise.

Opportunities for student exchanges to MIT and Zhejiang University
SUTD is developed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Zhejiang University. These collaborations open up available opportunities for student exchanges, joint projects and contests, and shared curriculum, providing an education with truly global experiences and perspectives.

Opportunities for international and local internships.
SUTD’s strong ties with local and international industries provide internship opportunities to bring together campus learnings with practical experiences. A successful internship has many benefits, including the potential of full-time employment upon graduation.

SUTD offers opportunities to work in the real world for world-class organizations. Various establishments have already pledged support to our internship programmes.

Exposure to the brightest minds, immersion in global education as well as participating in the latest developments and ideas
SUTD will attract the best faculty members from top academic institutions and students from around the world. It will expose students to the latest technology, practice, and research developments. The collaboration with MIT and Zhejiang University will ensure a truly global transfer of ideas, technology and experiences, leading to a world class global education.

Immersion in research
Research and project work are integral to an SUTD education. Students are exposed to cutting-edge research and group projects throughout their coursework and through important grand challenges and other research undertaken by an International Design Centre(IDC) located on the SUTD campus. Student research culminates in a capstone design project undertaken in their final year of study. Through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP), students can become involved in research projects at any time during their studies. If you have an idea or an area of interest, discuss it with a faculty member and start your research.

Preparing you for the industry
Before you embark on your internship, participate in SUTD’s co-curricular Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Programme (UPOP) which will help you gain the knowledge and skills, needed to effectively apply classroom learning to successful internships and careers after graduation. The UPOP programme provides you financial, management, and interpersonal skills necessary for a successful and rewarding internship.

Preparing you for a place in the world
SUTD graduates will be well prepared for rewarding careers ahead of them. We prepare students for flexible job opportunities across a wide range of dynamic industries including aerospace, biomedical/healthcare, buildings and structures, consulting, consumer electronics and digital media, energy, environment, financial services and business, manufacturing, robotics, telecommunications, and transportation.
